I Ought To Be in Pictures

Although I have more of a radio face, a picture of yours truly made the cover image of the latest mail out for the Catalyst Conference. The Catalyst logo is covered with photos of past Catalyst participants and the one I submitted made the cut.

I’ll try and scan it tomorrow so you can all see it. If you get the mailer today, my wife and I are on the top left of the big C logo. It is a b&w picture of us. Pretty cool.

If you haven’t heard of the Catalyst conference it is worth every penny it will cost you to get to Atlanta. This October will be my fifth (one, two, three, four, fiiiiiifth) Catalyst conference and I am stoked!!! Seth Godin, Tim Collins, Matt Chandler, Craig Groescel, and some guy named Billy Graham are scheduled to speak this year along with Andy Stanley and Dave Ramsey.

If you want more info check out the website or drop me an email and I’ll talk you into registering for the conference.

Best. Conference. Ever.

Over the Weekend

It was quite the weekend here at Casa de Felker. I hit up a concert VIP-style, I wogged a 5k, spent the evenings with my beautiful wife, and reached a milestone with my online relationships. For more on each of these events keep reading.

RUSH Concert
Rush 5 I have never considered myself a fan of RUSH before but I have enjoyed and appreciated their music in the past. This concert was incredible. It is hard to believe that three people could put out that level of sound. Their musicianship, stage presence, and visuals were outstanding. Perhaps my favorite part of the night was when the South Park kids (as “Lil’ Rush”) introduced the song “Tom Sawyer” on the video screen. Hilarious!!! I got the VIP hook up from a friend at church and was able to enjoy the second half of the concert from the VIP box. It was a great concert and and great night. Except…

Race for the Cure
Race TimeI shouldn’t have stood for three hours at the concert because I had the Race for the Cure bright and early on Saturday morning. This was my very first 5k and although the main goal was to just finish I was able to finish just under my target time. I lost a few minutes of time waiting on the portajohn and i wasted some time maneuvering around moms and their strollers but all in all I finished strong. I can’t wait for my next race!

501
Today I added my 501st friend on Facebook. This is kind of a big deal for me as I have personally met every one of the people listed as my friends (even Dave Ramsey). This is a pretty big milestone and I appreciate everyone of you who have added me as your friend. If you haven’t added me as your friend please drop me a message on Facebook. I was going to offer a prize for my 500th friend but the number snuck up on me and I wasn’t prepared. Maybe I’ll have something planned for the 550th. 🙂

Hope you have a great week!

Beg, Borrow, & Beg

Anyone need to get rid of some frequent flyer miles?

There is a conference I would love to attend this summer but I just can’t afford the airfare out there. The first set of tickets I found cost over $800 and they were economy tickets with layovers! I was able to find some tickets for less but not enough to really make a difference.

The conference is in the middle of June and I would need to get from Dallas to Washington, DC.

Is there anyone you know of who could help a brother out?

To A T

I got inspired by Cheryl’s post on the results of her online personality test and decided to see what the test had to say about me. To my surprise the test described me pretty well.

According to the test I am an ENTP-The Originator.

The desription from the site says that “ENTPs are logical, innovative, curious and downright inventive. They see possibilities for improvement everywhere and possess the ability to understand complex concepts. ENTPs are introspective and carefree nonconformists. They often neglect the more common areas of life while pursuing new solutions. ENTPs can be good conversationalists and exciting company.” Some famous ENTP are George Carlin, Teddy Roosevelt, “Weird” Al, and the founder of my iBoard, Walt Disney.

So I could just tell you myself that I am an intellectual and creative and all the other stuff the test describes but I would feel a little pompous.

Here is what my wife had to say about the results:

As Micheal’s wife, all I can say is “Wow.” This description is my husband. If you know Micheal well, you know that he is constantly looking to improve his ministry, his writing, and his everyday life. He always has something to add to a conversation and life with Micheal is never boring… As for the music, he is a walking iPod who lives to the beat. He can name where he was the first time he heard a song and what he was going through at the time. At least now we know that there is a reason why Micheal is the way he is, and I love him for it.

Thanks babe!

Try the test out for yourself though. Maybe you too will learn what’s wrong with a little more about your true self.

Catch Up

To say that the last few days were eventful would be a huge understaement. In the last 5 days I have traveled over 1500 miles and spent over 23 hours in my car. The bond between me and my iPod has, if can be believed, grown even more strong since Sunday. I haven’t posted since Friday so here is a bit of an update.

1) Press: Yours truly has gotten a little bit of press lately from the blog on some music sites. First, I was quoted by Spin magazine in an online editorial about the XM-Sirius merger. According to Spin I am “tuned in” to the issue. They even spelled my name right! Pretty cool. My original post can be seen here and the article from Spin can be found here.

Secondly, my story in my own voice was featured on the March 2nd edition of the @U2 podcast. The POPcast was celebrating the 10th anniversary of the release of U2’s POP album and the @U2 staff asked listeners to submit their favorite stories about the POP album or the tour, POPmart. I never thought in a million years that they would use my story but they did. You can listen to the podcast online or you can subscribe on iTunes. My part begins at around 54:20. Enjoy.

2) PlanetWisdom: I took my students to a great youth conference called PlanetWisdom last friday and saturday. The event was awesome. We had seats on the very front row and my students had a blast. The featured band was group named Addison Road and they totally rocked. The teaching times were solid and the whole event seemed to go flawlessly and smoothly especially from a youth leader’s perspective. It went so great that my students are already asking to go back next year.

On a related note, instead of driving back and forth from here to the conference, we stayed at my parent’s house.

Note to youth ministers out there: Burn all of your stuff from high school if you are going to let your youth group stay over at your parent’s house! They will find something that they think is hilarious. They will make fun of it. They will take pictures and post them on their Myspace pages. I’m just saying.

3) Bono-Fatigue I wouldn’t go so far as to diagnose what happened this weekend as Bono-fatigue but it was at least a case of over consumption. As I set out on my road trip I thought that it would be a great idea to listen to all of U2’s studio albums in a row without skipping any songs. Between Texas and Mississippi I listened to Boy, October, War, Under a Blood Red Sky, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, and Rattle and Hum. After All I Want is You finished playing I was about spent. “On the U2 timeline,” I thought, “this would be a natural break so I should probably quit this experiment right now before I just lose it.” On my return trip yesterday I picked up where I left off: Actung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. Again maybe not fatigue but my tummy does hurt.

4) Saturday: I am completely stoked about heading out to Colorado to hit the slopes. We will be shooooshing down the mountain at Monarch starting this weekend. Can’t wait.

A Little Jealous

I don’t get jealous very often and I don’t really have a competitive spirit. However, I’ll admit that today I am a little jealous of my friend Jordan.

Jordan and I grew up together through elementary, junior high and senior high. In junior high we played Y baseball together and then in high school we played football side by side. I was a guard and he was the tackle. I’m 5?9 and he is 6?8. Pictures of us together elicit quite a few laughs.

Jordan ended up going to Notre Dame on a football scholarship while I went to Harding to pursue a ministry career. Jordan now plays pro football for the Kansas City Chiefs.
I am so proud of my friend but I do find myself feeling a little green.

It isn’t his football career that has me feeling jealous. I love what I do and I would argue that I have the greatest job in the world. My dreams led me right where I want to be and Jordan’s dreams led him to the NFL. That’s how dreams should work!

No, I’m jealous because Jordan has his own Wikipedia entry! How cool is that?!?!?!

When I couldn’t sleep last night I went surfing the net looking at concert tickets, U2 and Coldplay fansites, and researching interesting stuff on Wikipedia. That is when I came across Jordan’s entry.

Jordan, I thought you had made it when I heard John Madden talk about you during a game but now I know you’ve made it. Congratulations my friend. I am so proud of your success.

I still jealous though.

Exposure

I got a shout out from the Relevant Podcast last week.

The editorial question of the week asked, “What show from your childhood would you like to see make a comeback?”

They read my response:

“I want to dance my cares away to ‘Fraggle Rock’!!!”

Too cool.

If you don’t subscribe to the Relevant Podcast, I would highly recommend that you do so. Immediately. It is a lot more than just questions about cartoon shows. It is a great podcast about God, Life, and Culture.

To hear my response and the other shows people would like to see comeback, download the Sept. 1 episode. (It happens about 45:45)
